Whats up? Just wanted to introduce myself, my intro class is Wed. in Huntington. My names Stefan. BJJ is something I always wanted to get in to, now that I have the time, I figured I would get started! I'm 22, and in pretty decent shape, and only getting better. I look forward to learning from you all! I have so many questions, So I'll start with this one.
I'm a fairly tall person haha... between 6'4 and 6'5... and about 220, I also have very long arms and legs. On my feet I'm good at using my size to my advantage, but I have little to no experience on the mat. Do you feel having such long limbs is an advantage, or a disadvantage on the ground?

both... long limbs are easier to grab a hold of and control but they also allow for you to pull of certain techniques with greater ease than those of us with stubby limbs lol

Yea, everything has its ups and downs. I actually lend myself to the thought that its a disadvantage, there like giant levers, begging to be pulled.. haha... on the other hand, I'm sure with good technique, it allows for serious leveraging.

Thanks a lot man, I'm looking forward to getting into it and meeting some people, It seems like you guys have a great atmosphere, which is really what I'm looking for. I'm looking for a positive and helpful learning environment, I look forward to being tapped out, and learning from it, and just having a good time while improving myself. It seems like thats the type of place you have, very conducive to the new guys!

Welcome! What I like about Serra BJJ is that everyone is made feel welcome there, especially those with no experience on the mat.
From a beginner here (training for less than 1 year):
As others have said, your long limbs could be both advantage (see Anderson Silva submitting Travis Lutter, or the Diaz brothers) and disadvantage.
As you start on your BJJ journey at Serra BJJ, you may get the most out of time you invest in your training if you focus on the fundamental techniques as taught by the instructors. If possible, avoid the temptation to rely on your strength or power or weight. (In the beginning, reliance on strength and power will be inevitable, because your technique is yet to be developed. As time goes on, try to reduce reliance on strength)
Your instructors will explain why you do certains moves in a certain way,and why certain movements should be avoided. Many of the explanations will involve concepts of leverage and balance, explained in plain English.
