No, I'm not referring to THAT kind of "joint".
For those who've noticed joint and ligament aches and pains since beginning this sport we call BJJ, I can't recommend taking a fish oil supplement enough. I've been personally told to take about 4000mg a day (I currently take 4 capsules of 1200mg Nature Made Omega-3 once a night) by one of my pharmacist coworkers, and my knees especially thank her every day I'm on the mat. Before starting BJJ, I was an avid hockey player who's knees have taken more abuse then my new haircut.
For anyone thinking, "4000mg?! That seems like its alot" - prescription Lovaza (fish oil supplement) is about 3 times stronger per pill, and the normal dosage is at least 2 capsules daily.
I've read many articles on the benefits of taking fish oil. The consensus is overwhelming to the point where some people insist it could cure cancer. I'm not a doctor, so I can't give you a solid answer with those claims. What I can tell you is that my knees pains have pretty much been eliminated. I also feel that My flexibility has increased. I especially notice this in my hips. I've always been admittedly fairly flexible, but there was always a point to where I could push my flexibility until I felt discomfort. Well, I'd say after about 2 weeks of taking fish oil, that pain no longer exists at that point.
All of this may be one giant coincidence for all I know. I don't care. If it's psychological, to me it's worth the $13 every 2 months.
