No, I'm not referring to THAT kind of "joint".

For those who've noticed joint and ligament aches and pains since beginning this sport we call BJJ, I can't recommend taking a fish oil supplement enough. I've been personally told to take about 4000mg a day (I currently take 4 capsules of 1200mg Nature Made Omega-3 once a night) by one of my pharmacist coworkers, and my knees especially thank her every day I'm on the mat. Before starting BJJ, I was an avid hockey player who's knees have taken more abuse then my new haircut.

For anyone thinking, "4000mg?! That seems like its alot" - prescription Lovaza (fish oil supplement) is about 3 times stronger per pill, and the normal dosage is at least 2 capsules daily.

I've read many articles on the benefits of taking fish oil. The consensus is overwhelming to the point where some people insist it could cure cancer. I'm not a doctor, so I can't give you a solid answer with those claims. What I can tell you is that my knees pains have pretty much been eliminated. I also feel that My flexibility has increased. I especially notice this in my hips. I've always been admittedly fairly flexible, but there was always a point to where I could push my flexibility until I felt discomfort. Well, I'd say after about 2 weeks of taking fish oil, that pain no longer exists at that point.

All of this may be one giant coincidence for all I know. I don't care. If it's psychological, to me it's worth the $13 every 2 months.

Fish oil and flax seed oil are both great. They're full of the "good" fats that help your heart function better, as well as the other benefits listed. Another vitamin that I've taken for awhile is Glucosamine with chondroitin and MSM. It's specifically meant to address joint problems, and I've noticed a significant difference since starting. Less of that nagging joint pain after training, a quicker recovery time, and easier, more productive stretches. I've used Osteo-Biflex to great effect, but any will do.

Great post Dan. I'm also a big proponent of fish oil. From a general health standpoint, many experts believe that fish oil can help in preventing cardiac disease. One reason for this is that heart disease seems to be a disease of inflamation and fish oil has an anti-inflamatory effect. Of course, avoiding saturated fats and trans fatty acids is crucial.

I was recently interviewed for a podcast and the topic was supplementation. The interviewer asked me what one of the most essential suplements for a figher was. With all of the fat burners and muscle builders being promoted out there, guess what my answer was?

You should be able to listen to the interview here:

I take fish oil everyday and feel pretty good taking it I also take a product called Supercissus RX by usplabs I have been taking it for a while and I really see the difference in my joints. you can also use it as an anti inflammatory medicine if you get banged up or have a nagging injury, its much safer than advil in that regard. Between the supercissus and the fish oil my joints feel pretty good.
