Hey I went for my first intro training program session 2 days ago and everthing everyone is saying is becoming apparent to me. After my second session wich is scheduled for this coming monday I think I will def be joining. I wanna join for the same reasons as you. Weight loss, confidence, discipline, self defense, releive stress, self control, and for me an overall self respect and better self image of myself. And to use the old saying (I wanna learn how not to fight first, and then if god forbid I have to, I wanna know how to do it right! The few guys I met when I first went to check it out already remembered my name the second time I saw them. It's kinda rude of me but I don't remember the names but I will (sorry guys) I like you have no experience in MMA at all. Just taking the intro class 2 days ago enspired me to start running. I like you am a pretty tall and overweight guy. Im worse though. I'm 6'2" 276lbs. I have a really good feeling about this place and if in the end I'm in better shape, can protect myself, and feel better about myself, in my opinion it's well worth any amount of money!! Hope this helps with your decision.

That is great. It is always nice to see new faces every time that I go to Serra BJJ.
Also, for those with children, I want to mention that Serra BJJ kids/children's program is excellent. I usually go to the East Meadow location on Saturdays, so I get to watch the children's instructors work with the children. The children's instructors are outstanding. The two main instructors, a recent purple and blue, along with others who fill in, have an unusually great rapport with children. They are very patient in explaining techniques to kids and safety is always emphasized. Children have special needs and requirements because they tend to have shorter attention spans in general. But the instructors are really excellent at explaining and helping children learn BJJ. They never raise their voices. Parents get to watch their children in action in the waiting area, which, I think is nice.
So I would also recommend Serra BJJ for children as well. I wish that I had started BJJ at Serra BJJ when I was 8 or 9.

I don't know the fees for children. I suggest that you call Serra BJJ, and make an appointment to sit in on a actual children's class (along with your child), and ask about fees.
As Danny and others have mentioned, when you consider monthly fees, you may want to think the fees in light of benefits of being a BJJ practioner. For your child, this would mean:
1. increased physical fitness (including better posture and greater flexibility), and long-term benefits of being fit (savings on medical bills in his later years). (This by itself would bring benefits of at least $500/month to your child and you)
2. greater self-confidence (benefits worth: $_____)
3. greater discipline, during traning and at home (benefits worth: $____)
4. learning to work with and cooperate with teachers and students (i.e. how to listen and follow directions) (benefits worth: $_____)
5. ability to defend oneself if faced with danger (benefits worth: $_____)
Note: my personal view is that one who practices BJJ is less likely to get into fights.
